Colleoni Chapel
The Colleoni Chapel is certainly the most beautiful building in Bergamo, although those around it are not left behind. It is dedicated to the saints Bartolomé, Mark and John the Baptist and was built between 1472 and 1476 as its own mausoleum by Bartolomeo Colleoni. The façade is characterized by the use of rooster-shaped decorations made of polychrome marble in white, red and black colors. On the main portal is the roseton, stranded by two medallions with portraits of Julio César and Trajano. The highest part of the base has nine rows of reliefs with biblical stories and four underreliefs representing the life of Hercules. For centuries it was believed that the remains of Colleoni were buried elsewhere and that the sarcophagus was empty. However, on November 21, 1969, the tomb of Colleoni was discovered in a wooden coffin, hidden in a double background of the sarcophagus.
