Bom Jesus do Monte

This place is composed of a neoclassical-style church (Bom Jesus Sanctuary) that rises on the top of a lush hill from which you can observe beautiful sunsets over the city; but its greatest attraction, and the main reason why it is so visited is by the impressive Baroque staircase known as Scadiaria do Bom Jesus. The rise to Bom Jesus do Monte is made by a succession of steps in the form of steps dating from different decades of the 18th century. The first step is attached to two chapels representing the stations of Via Cruces. Another of the steps that stand out are the Scadary two Five Senses, with its allegorical sources, whose pipes are born in the ears, eyes, mouth and nose of different statues; and the Scadaria das Três Virtudes, the highest of them, annexed to chapels and sources representing faith, hope and charity. There is also an elevator (funicular) that costs €1.10 and is open from 8: 00 to 20: 00. It is also possible to climb up to the church on the cobbled roads and the trails, both on foot and by bicycle, or on horseback (the price is usually about 5 €for every 15 minutes). On the top of the mountain you will also find the Sameiro Sanctuary.
