El Hierro
(Frontera · Canary Islands)
The island of El Hierro, by its small size, may make you think it has not much to offer, but that is to fall into a great mistake. In it you find sea and mountains that rise above 1,000 meters, arid volcanic landscapes and dense cloud forests, protected seabed and a rich, fresh and real km 0 cuisine. And quiet, especially quiet. In January 2000 the island was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, in 2014 it also became a Geopark, and since 1996 the Sea of the Calmas Marine Reserve protects the richest waters of El Hierro, an ideal place for diving. That it's a coastal destination doesn't mean it's a beach destination. In El Hierro you will not find large white sand beaches, and perhaps that is what saves it from the mass tourism that other islands of the Canary Islands prefer. Here you will find small coves of dark sand, with sometimes complicated access, and especially natural pools by the sea. The coast, for the most part, forms the volcanic malcountry and that fills it with forms and recollections.
