Founded by the Portuguese in 1680, on the banks of the Rio de la Plata, Colonia del Sacramento had a strategic role in their struggle with the Spaniards. Disputed by both for more than a century, the city finally fell into the hands of the Spaniards. Its well-preserved, solemn and intimate urban landscape is an example of a fusion achieved between Portuguese, Spanish and post-colonial architectural style.
